Art & Crafts

A collection of projects in different scales and changing materials, with Eretz Israel as the subject. Each object deals with a particular and unique aspect of the layers that compose Eretz Israel from my personal point of view. The projects explore stories and questions about geography, politics, Israeli culture, and Jewish tradition. All projects range between art and design, with each object being a product whose use is compatible and stems from the story it tells.

Woman of Sdom

Brass / 1x7 cm A pair of earrings that tell a story of the Dead Sea drying up during the last forty years as a result of minimal flow of water from the Jordan River  and the fact that  Dead Sea factories make use of the water from the Dead Sea.

Eretz Israel chicken brooch

Brass / 4x1 cm The concept of “melting pot” accompanies Israel since its establishment, supposedly as a must for the existence of the state and society by defining one truth and taboos, which are not negotiable. In many cases, reality changes and it turns out that the approach is fundamentally wrong. Ironically, Israelis have a short memory, which prevents change and new ideas.

Safety Room Menora

Bent metal / 45x18 cm Israel is the only country in the world where there are secure rooms in every building or an apartment. Recently, many secure rooms have been added to old buildings, which lead to a harsh fortress like architectural language.  Israel is the only country in the world where there are secure rooms in every building or an apartment. Wine tower- Kiddush cup

Glass / 7x15cm Water Tower is an Israeli symbol for settling and pioneering. Settling in Israel is Holy. In the past – to the religion of the Kibbutzim and today to the National Religious Movement. As such, it creates differences in each negotiation for peace, gaps that shatter all hopes to pieces.

The Jewish Galilee Skullcap

Knitting / 14 cm diameter In 1979, the government of Israel initiated a plan to settle the Galilee, which was populated until then by a continuum of Arab population. The Jewish settlements were established on hilltops and mountain peaks as fortresses overlooking the landscape. Securing a hold on the country, above the Arab settlements and cities that are located at the edge of the valleys and the foothills of the mountains. The lookout was designed as a lone, closed territorial unit, a perimeter motorway occupying the hill, with homes along it, overlooking the scenery, separated from each other and the mountain by huge Retaining walls. Unfortunately, this planning concept characterizes the urban planning  on mountains throughout Israel, The size of villages and cities alike. The roads that surround the mountains slopes are not streets, they don’t lead to functioned square  as they are in the center of the Arab settlements at the foothills of the mountains

Israel army shoelace

Army boots, Spray & shoelace / 30x30 cm The Israeli Army is made up of the people. The citizens worry and pray for their soldiers. However, there are unclear boundaries between religion and state in Israel. Quite often religious values penetrate the army and create a dissonance.

The Watchtower

Mahogany wood / 13x25 cm In Israel, watchtowers are an integral part of the scenery; new towers, old towers and abandoned ones. The Watchtower is a concept, which symbolizes Danger. We need it because we may face Danger and we have to identify it in time. As long as the Watchtower stands, the Danger exists for us. After a war or a major crisis, it seems that Life is offered an opportunity for revival. This new Life, as much as it is revised, is not free from the pain of war or crisis, which generated it. Past traumas mold and influence the content and the meaning of this Life. Personal memories and collective consciousness bond the past to the present and create the future. In this work, the Tower is represented by two architectural languages, one of the past and one of the present. The  object’s materiality is inspired by the form of stone fortifications. The object’s silhouette is inspired by the form of an industrial steel structure.  The cubes have a strong resemblance to coffins of those taken before their time, and their loss casts a shadow on Life forever.

Water Tank Chess

Birch plywood / 45x70 cm The Israeli landscape is characterized by water tanks on rooftops, which differentiate between Arab and Jewish towns by their color; in Arab towns they are black and simple, in Jewish towns they are white and technologically more advanced. I created a chess set, which incorporates this reality showing that this is a game that never ends.
